Frank T. Manheim joined George Mason University’s School of Public Policy in 2003 after retiring from the U.S. Geological Survey. At USGS his areas of expertise included marine geochemistry (including scientific drilling expeditions), offshore mineral resources, coastal hydrology, and environmental studies of estuarine and coastal sediments and waters.

He served as chief scientist on ocean cruises, and cooperated in major ocean studies with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and other U.S., German, Russian, Japanese, and Scandinavian marine research organizations. He has served on numerous interagency and scientific advisory panels, involving the NAS-NRC, NSF, U.S. EPA, MMS, NOAA, and state agencies.

Research interests at George Mason University include: U.S. environmental and natural resource policy and comparison of U.S. and EU environmental laws, lawmaking, and policy; history of U.S. scientific and technical agencies and science policy; regulatory and sociopolitical barriers to development of renewable energy and carbon sequestration; comparative study of science education in the U.S. and the EU; and African American educational history, with special emphasis on pre-1960s secondary school systems.

Masters (age group) competitive swimming
Recent results: first place in 50 and 100 m backstroke for age group, and 2nd in 200 m individual medley at 2010 World FINA Masters Swimming Championships, Gothenburg Sweden. Same results at U.S. National Long-Course Championships in San Juan, Puerto Rico (August 2010). Currently training for 2011 U.S. long course championships in Auburn, Alabama and World FINA Championships in Riccione Italy, June 2012. Observation: medals get easier with advancing age, so long as one avoids competition with former Olympic Champions!
