Lisa A. Sturtevant is associate research professor at the George Mason University School of Public Policy (SPP) and a researcher at the Center for Regional Analysis. Her primary areas of research include regional economic development, migration and mobility, demographics, and housing. Dr. Sturtevant’s most recent research includes articles and reports on housing demand in the Washington DC metropolitan area, residential mobility and migration, and forecasts of development for the Dulles rail corridor. She teaches statistics, program and policy evaluation, and survey methodology in the School of Public Policy.

Prior to working at the GMU Center for Regional Analysis, Dr. Sturtevant spent four years as County Demographer in the Arlington County Department of Community Planning, Housing and Development.

Dr. Sturtevant teaches quantitative methods courses to master’s and PhD students in the School of Public Policy. In addition, she teaches one-day workshops for staff of local and regional governments, businesses and associations on accessing demographic and economic data to support their organizations’ missions.

Dr. Sturtevant completed her PhD in public policy from George Mason University in May 2006. Her dissertation was titled Immigrant Suburbs: An Analysis of the Residential Mobility and Location Decisions of Recent Immigrants. She received her master’s degree in public policy from the University of Maryland in 2000 and a BS in mathematical economics from Wake Forest University in 1994.

PUBP704: Statistical Methods in Policy Analysis
Graduate-level introduction to statistical methods and techniques used in policy sciences. Topics include descriptive statistics, sampling and probability theory, graphical data display, estimation and significance
testing, contingency tables, bivariate regression and correlation, and multiple regression, with introduction to computer-based statistical analysis.

PUBP 710: Introduction to Survey Methodology
A course offered to master’s and Phd students providing an introduction to concepts and practice of survey methodology. Topics include sampling, survey error, questionnaire design, data collection methods, survey administration, post collection data processing, preparing survey results for publication and ethics in survey methodology.

PUBP713: Policy and Program Evaluation
A methods course offered to students in the master’s program. The course examines the many facets of the evaluation process including the purposes and types of evaluations, evaluation strategies, evaluation methodology, and applications. The class includes instructor lecture, focused around a text and case studies, as well as student discussions and presentations.

PUBP501: Policy and Organizational Analysis Prepares masters level students to engage in systematic quantitative and qualitative analysis. Emphasis on research design, information acquisition, data analysis techniques, basic statistical analysis, and presentation.

REAL 796: Affordable Housing Studies Supervised independent study for three students in the School of Management’s Master’s program in Real
Estate Development. Topics covered included history and trends in affordable housing policy and regulation, local policy responses to affordable housing demand, and public-private partnership approaches
to residential development. The students used four jurisdictions in the Washington DC metropolitan area as their case studies to investigate these affordable housing issues.

Math Camp (Fall and Spring)
Two-day math review session for public policy master’s students preparing to enroll in microeconomics. Includes lecture, pre- and post-tests, and a homework assignment.
