The
Master of Arts in New Professional Studies:
Knowledge Management (PSKM)
The Knowledge Management (KM) master's
program is offered jointly with the National
Defense University (NDU) Information Resource
Management College (IRMC). Admission is
limited to holders of NDU certificates.
All KM degree applicants must have completed
either the Chief Information Officer (CIO)
Program or Advanced Management Program
(AMP) offered by the NDU-IRMC or its equivalent.
Applicants will generally be eligible to
transfer in 15 hours of graduate credit
towards their master's degree.
The program is intended for graduate
professionals in all types of organizations
- government departments and agencies,
for-profit businesses, and non-profit
institutions - working in areas such
as general management, knowledge management,
information technology, management
information systems, systems integration,
and process reengineering. It is focused
on helping its students lead the transition
to modern management practices that
maximize the tools of the information
society.
PSKM examines how professionals have largely transitioned from
industrial workers to knowledge workers
while the organizations that employ them
remain strongly influenced by management
theories developed in factories. The program
teaches professionals how to manage complex
tasks in collaborative ways using the
latest knowledge-enabling technologies.
"Our focus is on the human side of
knowledge management, " says Program
Director Ann Baker. Students gain the
necessary technical background through
the School of Public Policy's partnership
with the National Defense University
Information Resources Management College.
Students obtain a working knowledge of both the theory and practices
of managing in a knowledge-rich
work environment. This includes
gaining an understanding of how collaborative
technologies support knowledge
work.
