Arnauld Nicogossian
Office of International Medical Policy
The George Mason School of Public Policy is a leader in studying the policy role of medicine in international affairs, homeland security, and aerospace. From the political and logistical ramifications of distributing medical aid across borders after a natural disaster to assessing readiness of first responders to handle a bioterror attack, the School is training leaders in the field and conducting essential, life-saving research.
The program is headed by Dr. Arnauld Nicogossian, the former senior adviser on health issues at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), works closely with organizations such as NASA, the American Red Cross, the U.S. Agency for International Development, and the Department of Health and Human Services to give students a comprehensive examination of a wide variety of health-related policy issues.
"The School of Public Policy is the right academic institution to teach the evolving interdependencies of health and medical policies of a globalizing world," says Nicogossian, who for 30 years helped NASA to ensure the health and safety of its workforce, including the astronauts and international crews, through research and practice. "Many public policy students will eventually work in the D.C. area, helping formulate health policy in the 21st century. We want to give them, as non-health professionals, knowledge and tools to handle complex major issues.''
In addition to conducting critical research, Nicogossian teaches an elective course for master's students in the Public Policy and International Commerce programs on international medical policy, providing them with a unique perspective on health care rarely given to non-medical professionals.
