Michal McElwain
Director, Study Abroad
The George Mason School of Public Policy gives students the opportunity to witness first-hand the rapidly growing Latin American and Asian economies through short, unique, commerce-oriented study-abroad
programs in Mexico, China, and India. It also offers intensive, on-the-ground examinations of the United States' economic and political bonds with the United Kingdom through study programs offered in conjunction with Oxford University.
"Being immersed in a study program outside the United States allows students to see the world and U.S. policy towards it from another perspective,'' says Michal McElwain, director. "This exposure always has a major impact on our students' own perspectives, enriching their studies and giving them valuable experience for when they leave the School and engage the world with what they've learned.''
The study abroad opportunities, typically offered in tailored sessions during recesses in the academic year, build on subjects covered in the School's policy curriculum, such as international trade, commerce, culture, and security. The trips mix classroom learning with intimate cultural opportunities, giving participating students a total immersion experience.
