Biography
John E. Petersen is a Professor of Public Policy and Finance at the George Mason School of Public Policy. Prior to joining the faculty, he was President and Division Director of the Government Finance Group/ARD, a financial research and advisory firm located in Arlington, Virginia. In that capacity, he worked as a financial advisor and consultant to governments and corporations within the United States and abroad.

Earlier, Dr. Petersen served from 1977 to 1991 as Senior Director of the Government Finance Research Center, a division of the Government Finance Officers Association. Before that he worked for the Securities Industry Association and the Federal Reserve Board of Governors.

Dr. Petersen earned a B.A. in economics from Northwestern University in 1962 and an M.B.A. from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1964. He earned his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1967. He is a member of more than a dozen professional societies and has worked in more than a dozen countries on four continents.

Dr. Petersen has written the ``Finance'' column for Governing magazine for 12 years. He serves on the editorial boards of several professional journals including Public Budgeting and Finance, Municipal Finance Journal, and Public Works Management and Policy.
