Biography
Arnauld Nicogossian serves as Distinguished Research Professor and
Director, Center for the Study of International Medical Policies and Practices, at the School of
Public Policy. He is also a Senior Advisor for Medical and Health
Policy to the NASA Office of Chief Health and Medical Systems.
Dr. Nicogossian retired from National Aeronautics and Space Administration
in January 3, 2003, after a distinguished career spanning over three
decades. He was the Associate Administrator for Life and Microgravity
Sciences Office, Chief Medical Officer and Senior Advisor for Health
Affairs. Dr. Nicogossian managed and funded an extensive portfolio
of research and development grants in the areas of space biology,
medicine, physics and chemistry. He was also responsible for the oversight
of the NASA workforce and astronauts health programs. He is also a
Diplomat of American Board of Preventive Medicine (Aerospace).
Dr. Nicogossian has practiced internal medicine in New York and Fairfax,
Virginia, and has published extensively, including the definitive
textbook in Space Physiology and Medicine. He has been recognized
nationally and internationally for his contributions to space medicine,
international collaboration and contributions to improve life on Earth
including telemedicine for disaster relief and in support of expeditions
into extreme environments. He served as President of three professional
societies, and holds a faculty appointment at the Uniformed Services
University of Health Sciences, Bethesda, Maryland.
Dr. Nicogossian is currently conducting research in the area of biodefense,
biosafety and international public health policy, and teaches graduate
courses in relevant areas of his research activities.
