It was no surprise that when the members of the Association of Small Business Development Centers (ASBDC) were looking to elect their next chair, they chose Jody Keenan, the state director of the Virginia Small Business Development Centers (SBDC).

The ASBDC represents the collective interest of the national network of SBDCs. A partnership program, ASBDC works with private enterprise, government, higher education, and local nonprofit economic development organizations. More than 500,000 businesses are assisted by ASBDC member programs each year.

Where are the Women?

Connie L. McNeely, associate professor of public policy at Mason, is principal investigator for a major project that is examining the institutional diffusion of policies and practices aimed at increasing the number of women faculty members in the various science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields in U.S. universities. The project, Policy Diffusion and Organizational Impacts on STEM Women in Higher Education, is funded by the National Science Foundation.

In his policy brief “Global Flows of Talent: Benchmarking the United States,” David Hart, associate professor of public policy and a board member of the nonprofit think tank Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, examines this factor, analyzing how immigration policy affects the flow of talent.

Awards, Honors, Appointments


Sarah Ayers (ICP '06) was sworn in as a foreign affairs officer (civil service) for the U.S. Department of State in September. She works in the Office of Missile Threat Reduction.

Adjunct Professor Brent Eastwood was appointed to the Commission on Employment for the City of Alexandria, Virginia. This 13-member board of representatives from business, educational agencies, organized labor, and economic development agencies is appointed by the mayor and the city council.

Presentations

Professor Mark Rozell presented a retrospective of the 2007 Virginia elections at the monthly meeting of the Fairfax Committee of 100 on November 8 in Tyson’s Corner, Virginia.

Adjunct Professor Bonnie Stabile presented a paper at the 27th annual meeting of the Association for Politics and the Life Sciences, held this year in Cincinnati, Ohio, on October 13. The title of her talk was "Creation Museums and the Politics of Evolution."
