PRESIDENTIAL MANAGEMENT FELLOWS PROGRAM FINALISTS
Four
SPP students who are pursuing master’s degrees—Dara
Duncan Lira, Mark Flanigan, Christopher Friedline
and Lorrie Lopes—were recently selected as
finalists for the prestigious and competitive Presidential
Management Fellows (PMF) Program. President George
W. Bush is quoted on the program’s web site
explaining its purpose: “to attract to the
Federal service outstanding men and women from a
variety of academic disciplines and career paths
who have a clear interest in, and commitment to,
excellence in the leadership and management of public
policies and programs.” Founded in 1977, the
PMF program draws on graduate students from diverse
backgrounds to provide a continuing source of educated
men and women to meet public service challenges.
“Our selection speaks quite well of the outstanding teaching, mentoring
and career services support offered to us as students by the school,” says
Flanigan, one of SPP’s finalists. “I'm particularly proud to be representing
the Peace Operations Policy Program. I'm really humbled by this opportunity.”
“I am excited about being a PMF finalist because I may be given the opportunity
to have an impact on policy making within the U.S. government—and to make
the world a better place,” says Friedline, another finalist. “I’m
hoping to get a policy analysis position somewhere within the Department of Defense—either
with the Chief of Naval Operations or the Defense Threat Reduction Agency.”
