NICOGOSSIAN AWARDED NASA MEDAL

SPP Professor
Arnauld Nicogossian

NASA recently presented Arnauld Nicogossian, Distinguished Research Professor at SPP, its Exceptional Service Medal. “It was awarded to me as one of the team members of the NASA-Russian Space Agency Advisory Committee on the safety of human spaceflight,” says Nicogossian. “I was given the award for how I contributed to the research of operational safety for human exploration missions, and for promoting U.S.-Russian cooperation in space research and operation.”

Nicogossian retired from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration on January 3, 2003, after a distinguished career spanning over three decades. He was the Associate Administrator for Life and Microgravity Sciences Office, Chief Medical Officer, and Senior Advisor for Health Affairs. He also managed and funded an extensive portfolio of research and development grants in the areas of space biology, medicine, physics and chemistry; and was responsible for the oversight of the NASA workforce and astronauts health programs.

Recognized nationally and internationally for his contributions to space medicine, Nicogossian is currently conducting research in the area of biodefense, biosafety and international public health policy at SPP, where he also teaches graduate courses in relevant areas of his research activities and directs SPP’s International Medical Policy Office.
