IN THE NEWS— SUSAN TOLCHIN

Professor Susan Tolchin appeared on Lou Dobbs’ CNN show on July 11 to discuss the ramifications of the interest shown by a Chinese company—of which the Chinese government owns a 70 percent share—in the U.S. oil company Unocal. “We have never had a policy about what strategic industries [or which] materials we want to keep in this country,” Tolchin said. “And we've never had a policy about ... how foreign investment relates to our independence of movement with regard to foreign policy.” She was also quoted in The New York Times Week in Review and in The San Francisco Chronicle shortly after on the same subject. Wisconsin Public Radio hosted her on July 12 to tackle the question: Was Bush advisor Karl Rove responsible for leaking the name of a covert CIA operative?

Tolchin spent an hour discussing the topic, as well as presidential power and ethics in government. She is the author or co-author of a number of books, including “The Angry American – How Voter Rage is Changing the Nation.”
