FACULTY

During
July and August, SPP
Professor Mark Addleson was a visiting lecturer at the Graduate School
of Business,
University of Cape Town, South Africa—most
likely the only business school in the world
which was originally a prison. It was erected
near the
seashore and the inmates, who were imprisoned
under extremely harsh conditions, were forced
to build
the breakwater for the Cape Town harbor in the
nineteenth century.
That site is now a prime
location above the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront,
which
attracts thousands of tourists, thanks to its
wonderful views. |
The
building had been derelict for many years before
someone
had the idea to “re-use” it
as the university’s graduate business school.
The existing structure—which has two-foot
thick stone walls—was refurbished and is
now used for offices and students’ group
work. Late one night (because South Africa is
6 hours ahead of EST), Addleson gave an online
lecture
to students in various locations in America from
the office of Colin Firer, Academic Director.
His office is at the top of the North Tower shown
in
the picture. |
