Renowned International Trade Experts Address SPP Classes

Students who sign up for SPP Professor Stuart Malawer’s International Trade Relations (603) and Global Trade Wars (711) classes may expect just another course filled with lectures about theory and politics. However, they get more than they bargain for. Malawer, who brings to the classroom his background as an international trade lawyer with a Ph.D. in international relations, gives students an opportunity to interact with some of Virginia’s and Washington, D.C.’s most successful professionals and practitioners in the field of international trade. These guest speakers, known to rub elbows with Washington’s elite, help him to shed light on what it’s really like to work and compete in a global marketplace.

“My students don’t get as worked up over theory or political debates as they do about learning practical skills. All these speakers bring something to the table that they really want to know about how trade and business are conducted in the marketplace today,” Malawer said. Students’ interest in the practical side of policymaking reflects their backgrounds as professionals in the private sector and as government consults, he added.

Malawer said that the speakers have been greatly impressed by his students. “They think the students are really engaged and attuned to what they were talking about,” he said, adding, “They also are impressed that ICP has so many students from countries around the world.”

Malawer balances the speakers’ visits with an interactive teaching approach that includes online material, power point presentations and team projects. “My focus is on bringing to bear my legal, political and business expertise to critical trade policy issues of the day for those actually engaged in the global marketplace,” he said, adding, “My teaching approach is best summed up as understanding public policy for the marketplace or public policy for the private sector.”
