As mentioned previously, you can find all the information on APA Style that you need on the GMU library website at: http://infoguides.gmu.edu/style. (That page also has sections with information on MLA and Chicago Styles.) See if you can cite the quotation above using the two Chicago styles (in-text and Turabian) and MLA. For specific information about in-text citations for quotes in APA Style, you can check: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/02/.
All of the answer choices used the same year and page number in this question, because knowledge of the correct style is being tested here, not the facts. If, however, you needed to look up publication details, you should first check the GMU library catalog, and if you don’t find the information there, you could check Google Books. - Robert Paul Wolff wrote in Authority, edited by Joseph Raz, "Politics is the exercise of power of the state…" Which of the following shows the correct citation for this quotation?
- a. "Politics is the exercise of power of the state…" (Wolff 1990) Incorrect Answer
- b. "Politics is the exercise of power of the state…" (Raz 1990, 20) Incorrect Answer
- c. "Politics is the exercise of power of the state…" (Wolff 1998, 20) Incorrect Answer
- d. "Politics is the exercise of power of the state…" (Raz 1998, 20) Incorrect Answer
- e. "Politics is the exercise of power of the state…" (Wolff, 1990, 20) Correct Answer
The correct answer is e. "Politics is the exercise of power of the state…" (Wolff, 1990, 20).
The book Authority is written by Joseph Raz, but you are quoting Robert Paul Wolff (and therefore cite Wolff). You find the appropriate date of the book by looking it up in the GMU online catalog, Google Books, or Amazon. In your bibliography (or, in APA language, Reference List), the entry for the item would look as follows:
Wolff, R. P. (1990). The Conflict between Authority and Autonomy. In Joseph Raz (Ed.), Authority (pp. 20-55). New York: New York University.
Remember that in your reference list, you should reference the page numbers of the entire article by Wolff and not simply the page you quoted in your text. For more information about this topic, see the section on Introductions, Prefaces, Forewords and Afterwords on http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/06/. - In your manuscript, you would like to use a photograph that you have obtained from SpiegelOnline. However, SpiegelOnline purchased the picture from Reuters. How would you credit the photo in your manuscript?
- a. You credit Reuters online Incorrect Answer
- b. You credit SpiegelOnline only Incorrect Answer
- c. You credit SpiegelOnline and Reuters equally Incorrect Answer
- d. You first credit SpiegelOnline and then note that SpiegelOnline's source was Reuters Correct Answer
- e. You credit Reuters first and then note that your source was SpeigelOnline Incorrect Answer
The correct answer is d. You first credit SpiegelOnline and then note that SpiegelOnline's source was Reuters.
The key in this situation is to make clear what *your* source for the picture is (SpeigelOnline) and then to give credit to the presumed original source (Reuters). Think of citation information as providing bread crumbs to the reader so that she can see where you obtained your material and then where the more original source might be found. You also want to give credit to the originator (Reuters), but you must make clear to the reader that you know the originator because SpeigelOnline told you that Reuters was the source of the picture.

SPP tuition for in-state students is approximately half the cost of the tuition at private competitors in the D.C. area. Employer information sessions are offered each semester with public, private, and nonprofit organizations such as the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, RAND, Third Way, and the Department of Treasury. More than 70% of SPP students are employed while pursuing their degrees -- classes are offered in the late afternoon and early evening to accommodate full- and part-time students.
