| Professor Kenneth Button delivered the keynote address, “Air Transport Policy in the European Union” to the VII SITRAER/II RIDITA Conference in Sao Paulo in November. He also presented at the conference, “The Role of Small Airports on Economic Development,” which he wrote with S. Doh and J. Yuan. In Seoul, Button delivered the keynote address, “Current Research Trends and Prospects on Environmental Issues in Air Transport Fields” at the Air Transport and Environment Workshop in November.
In Jerusalem in November, Button delivered the keynote address, “Do the Cost Structures of Rail Operations allow Commercial Services to be Viable?” to the Roundtable on Rail Mega Projects. Also in Jerusalem in November, Button presented “Is the High-speed Train a Viable Transportation Option for the US?” to the NECTAR Conference.

| Professor Andrew Hughes Hallett was retained in October by the Central Bank of the Netherlands to write a report, with Professor Harry Garretsen of the University of Groningen, on the research performance of the Central Bank and how well that has allowed the bank to play its policy role within the Euro system. The Central Bank has supervisory and payments systems responsibilities in the Netherlands, and advises the European Central Bank on monetary policy. The reports are commissioned only every 7 years. |

| SPP PhD student Monique Helfrich, along with Vivek Prasad (PhD student in environmental science and public policy) and Professor Susan Crate (College of Science), received the International Award for Excellence in the area of Climate Change: Impacts and Responses. The award was presented to Helfrich, Prasad, and Crate by Common Ground Publishing for their paper “Social Capital as a Source of Adaptive Capacity to Climate Change in Developing Countries.” The authors have been invited to present a plenary session at the second International Conference on Climate Change: Impacts and Responses to be held at the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia, in July 2010 when the award will be formally presented to the authors. |

| Shana Leenerts (ICP ’08) has been named the Howard Baker, Jr. Award winner by the National Security Education Program (NSEP). The NSEP notes in its press release that Leenerts “has shown an outstanding commitment to serving our nation through her work as a Counterterrorism Fellows Program Specialist within the U.S. Department of Defense and as an Academic Exchange Specialist with the U.S. Department of State.” The award ceremony took place on September 9 in Washington, D.C.
