Professor Ruth Speaks at Conference
Professor Steve Ruth presented a two day seminar titled Telecommunications: Key Concepts and Best Practices, for economists in the Science and Technology Directorate at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) in Washington, D.C. The seminar covered emerging issues in global telecommunications deployment, with particular emphasis on the rapid development of wireless telecom in Latin America and the Caribbean.

University Professor Zoltan Acs, presented "Entrepreneurship and the Great Recession: Theory, Data and Policy" to the National Economists Club on December 16 in Washington, D.C.
 
Professor Ketkar - presenter at the Youth Forum on the Global Financial Crisis
Assistant Professor Sonia Ketkar, presented "The Impacts on International Trade" at the Youth Forum on the Global Financial Crisis. The event was held on December 13 at the World Bank in Washington, D.C. and was organized by the World Affairs Council.
 
Professor Acs - keynote speaker at Economic Outlook Conference
University Professor Zoltan Acs delivered the keynote address, "Job Creation and the Great Recession," at the University of South Carolina's Darla Moore School of Business 30th annual Economic Outlook Conference on December 9 in Columbia, South Carolina. The theme of the conference was small business and the economic recovery.

Associate Professors Connie McNeely and Laurie Schintler presented their paper, "Gender Issues in Scientific Collaboration and Workforce Development," to the U.S. National Science and Technology Council at the National Press Club.
 
Professor Anacker - appointed Co-Track Chair of Housing and Community Development Track
Assistant Professor Katrin B. Anacker was appointed as Co-Track Chair of the Housing and Community Development Track for the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP) conferences in 2011, 2012, and 2013.

Assistant Professor Katrin Anacker received the Early Career Housing Award 2010 from the Housing Education and Research Association.
 
Distinguished Visiting Professor Hayden - recipient of the Honorary Officer of the Order of Australia
Distinguished Visiting Professor Michael Hayden (retired Air Force general, former CIA director, and head of the National Security Agency) was awarded the Honorary Officer of the Order of Australia. The ceremony was held at the home of Australian Ambassador to the United States, the Honorable Kim Beazley.

Associate Professor Ramkishen Rajan was a discussant during the session "Implications and Future of Korean Economy, 2011–12" on November 18 in Washington, D.C. The event, "State of the World Economy, 2011–2012, Whither or Wither?," was hosted by the U.S.–Korea Institute at SAIS and Korea Institute of Finance, and sponsored by JoongAng Ilbo and the Asian Studies Program at SAIS.

Professor Goldstone delivered the lecture, "Immigration and Democracy, from Know Nothings to Koran Burning" as part of the Democracy Seminar Series at the Harvard Kennedy School's Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation on November 17.

Professor Mark Rozell presented "The 2010 Midterm Elections" on November 18 at the Fairfax Committee of 100 monthly meeting in Vienna, Virginia; November 15 at the Dulles Area Democrats' monthly meeting; November 10 to both the Rumi Forum postelection discussion program in Washington, D.C., and the SPP Alumni Association in Arlington; and November 9 to the 123 Club meeting in Tysons Corner, Virginia.

Professor Katrin Anacker presented the paper "Analyzing Foreclosures and Subprime Lending in the Washington DC Metropolitan Area" at the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management (APPAM) 2010 Annual Fall Research Conference in Boston, MA on November 6. James H. Carr co-authored the paper.

Zoltan Acs, University Professor and chief economist with U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), discussed challenges faced by cities and entrepreneurship development during the roundtable discussion "Entrepreneurial Cities" on November 4. On November 5, Acs presented the Global Entrepreneurship and Development Index and its rankings.

University Professor Susan J. Tolchin delivered the paper, "Patrons, Advocates and Entrepreneurs: Patronage Politics in the 21st Century," at the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management conference held in November in Boston.
 
Professor Ketkar - member of editorial board for Journal of International Commerce and appointed associate director of the Center for Emerging Market Policies
Assistant Professor Sonia Ketkar is on the editorial board of the Journal of International Commerce.  Professor Ketkar was also appointed associate director of SPP's Center for Emerging Market Policies.

Professor McClain - moderator at the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials annual meeting
Professor John McClain, Center for Regional Analysis deputy director, moderated a panel on sustainable transportation practices at the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials annual meeting on October 31 in Biloxi, Mississippi. The session included a summary of how livability has been defined; presentations from Department of Transportation officials from Arizona, Pennsylvania, and Colorado on how their states have addressed livability; and group discussion on defining and implementing the concept of livability.
 
Professor Gifford - presenter at U.S. Department of Transportation Office of the Inspector General
Professor Jonathan Gifford, associate dean for research, spoke on "Surface Transportation Authorization—Update" to the U.S. Department of Transportation Office of the Inspector General as part of its community of practice program on October 28.

Professor Manheim - presenter at Transatlantic Forum for Science, Innovation, and Higher Education; and the USA Science and Engineering Festival
Affiliate Professor Frank T. Manheim presented "A Tale of Two Chemistry Departments: American and Swedish" to the Transatlantic Forum for Science, Innovation, and Higher Education, Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, D.C., on October 19. The forum was sponsored by the Norwegian Research Council and Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. Manheim also presented the power point "Global Climate Change" for Sigma Xi booth at the USA Science and Engineering Festival on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., October 23–24.

PhD student Rough - recipient of the Franklin Pinch Award for Best Graduate Student Paper and presenter at Inter-University Seminar on Armed Forces and Society (IUS)/Canada Conference
PhD student Jill Rough was the winner of the Franklin Pinch Award for Best Graduate Student Paper at the Inter-University Seminar on Armed Forces and Society (IUS)/Canada Conference held in Toronto, Canada from October 15-17. Rough also presented a condensed version of her dissertation, "Is the Abrams Doctrine Valid?: Exploring the Impact of Army National Guard Mobilization on U.S. Public Support for the War on Terror" during the conference on October 17.

Professor Mark Rozell moderated the panel "Religion and the 2010 Elections: The Impact of Religious Issues and Religious Voters," which was sponsored by Catholic University's Institute for Policy Research and Catholic Studies on October 13 at the National Press Club. Panelists included Matthew Green, professor of politics at Catholic University; Robert Jones, CEO of Public Religion Research Institute; and Greg Smith, a senior researcher at the Pew Research Center's Forum on Religion and Public Life.
 
Professor Anacker - presenter and discussant at Annual Meeting of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning
Professor Katrin Anacker will present the paper "Analyzing the Effect of Walkability on Property Values in Louisville" at the Annual Meeting of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP) in Minneapolis, MN on October 7. Anacker wrote the paper with John Gilderbloom, Joshua Ambrosius, and Zachary Kenitzer. Anacker will participate in the roundtable "Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Issues in Planning (Dedicated to the Memory of Sue Hendler)," presenting "Queering the Suburbs: Analyzing Property Values in Male and Female Same-Sex Suburbs in the United States" on October 7. Professor Anacker will also discuss four papers in the session Housing Market Dynamics and Impacts on October 9.
 
PhD student Wahab - selected by the Foreign Policy Initiative for inaugural FPI Future Leaders Program
PhD student Bilal Wahab was selected by the Foreign Policy Initiative as one of 20 people in its inaugural FPI Future Leaders Program. These individuals meet on a monthly basis and engage in discussions on foreign policy designed to help them become foreign policy leaders.
 
Wallace Johnson - selected as a Cambridge Who's Who Professional of the Year in Technical and Management Assistance
Wallace Johnson, SPP's Mason Enterprise Center director of the Mentor-Protégé Program and deputy director of the Procurement Technical Assistance Program at Mason, was selected a Cambridge Who's Who Professional of the Year in Technical and Management Assistance. According to Cambridge Who's Who, inclusion in the registry is an honor limited to individuals who have demonstrated leadership and achievement in their industry and occupation. Only two male and two female members in each discipline are named Professionals of the Year.

Associate Professor Ramkishen Rajan was reappointed a senior research fellow with the Claremont Institute of Economic Policy Studies at Claremont McKenna College and Claremont Graduate University.

Professor Philip Auerswald will be a topic leader for Strengthening Market Based Solutions at the 2010 annual meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) in New York City, September 21-23.
 
Professor Mayer and Professor Rozell - co-panelists at Mason Constitution Day
Professor Jeremy Mayer and Professor Mark Rozell were co-panelists for the Mason Constitution Day program on the Fairfax Campus on September 15. The panel discussed the Tea Party Movement and the 2010 elections.
 
Professor Armor - presenter at conference sponsored by the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights
Professor David Armor participated on the panel, "The Way Forward: Spotlight on Education" during the conference, "A New Era: Defining Civil Rights in the 21st Century" which was sponsored by the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. The conference was held at the National Press Club on September 14.
 
Professor Acs – speaker at Small Business Roundtable
Professor Zoltan Acs, the new chief economist for the Office of Advocacy, will be the speaker at the Small Business Communicators Roundtable on September 9 from 9:30am to 11:00am. The event will be held in the Eisenhower conference room at SBA headquarters, located at 409 3rd Street, SW in Washington, DC. The topic for discussion will be "Can we still compete? Professor Janine Wedel is the keynote speaker at the international conference on "Conflict of Interest in Central and Eastern Europe" held August 25-27 at the Institute of Sociology, Nicolaus Copernicus University Torun, Poland.

Professors Rajan and Hughes Hallett – presenters at ADBI-ISEAS-GMU Workshop in Singapore
Professors Ramkishen Rajan and Andrew Hughes Hallett, directors of the Center for Emerging Market Policy will present papers at the workshop: Exchange Rate and Macroeconomic Management in Emerging Asia in the Post-Crisis Era. Rajan, an organizer of the workshop, will present "Management of Asian Currencies" and Hughes Hallett will present "China-US Business Cycle." The workshop, sponsored by the Asian Development Bank Institute, Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, and George Mason University, will be held in Singapore on August 6.
 
MPP student, Casey Morgan – Bryce Harlow Foundation Fellowship recipient
Casey Morgan (Current MPP student) was awarded a prestigious Bryce Harlow Foundation Fellowship for the 2010-2011 academic year. The Fellowship recognizes graduate students who are high academic achievers with career goals in public affairs, government relations, or lobbying.  The Fellowship provides scholarship funds and mentoring opportunities with the Bryce Harlow Foundation's board members.

Professor Katrin Anacker will present "Analyzing Determinants of Foreclosure in the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area" on July 22 at the Heidelberg Center for American Studies (HCA) and the Geographical Institute at Ruprecht-Karls-Universitaet in Heidelberg/Germany via videoconference.
 
Professor Button – presenter and chair at Air Transport Research Society conference
Professor Kenneth Button, director of the Center for Transportation Policy, Operations, and Logistics and of the Center for Aerospace Policy Management, presented "Does Institutional Economics Add to Our Understanding of the Air Transport Industry?" to the 14th Air Transport Research Society annual conference, held in Porto, Portugal, July 6 to 9. Button also chaired the opening keynote session debate.

Professor Katrin B. Anacker was appointed as Review Editor of the Journal of Planning Education and Research (JPER) effective July 1, 2010.
