Professor Acs – presenter at conference in Amsterdam
On June 28 Professor Zoltan Acs presented "The Global Entrepreneurship and Development Index" to the Amsterdam Center for Entrepreneurship at the University of Amsterdam.
 
Professor Button – keynote speaker at conference in Slovenia
Professor Kenneth Button, director of the Center for Transportation Policy, Operations, and Logistics and of the Center for Aerospace Policy Management, delivered the keynote address, "Sustainable Development and Sustainable Logistics: The Role of Institutions" to the 7th International Conference on Logistics and Sustainable Transport, held in Celje, Slovenia, June 24 to 26.
 
Professor Acs – keynote speaker at conference in London
Professor Zoltan Acs delivered the keynote "The Global Entrepreneurship and Development Index" on June 16 at the DRUID conference: Opening Up Innovation: Strategy, Organization and Technology, held at the Imperial College London Business School.
 
Keith Segerson - selected as one of five delegates representing Virginia on a trade mission to Beijing, China
Keith Segerson, Managing Director of the Mason Enterprise Center at the School of Public Policy, was selected to be one of five delegates representing Virginia on a trade mission to Beijing, China. The Southern Governors' Association organized the mission which consisted of 39 representatives from nine states and territories representing the American South. The delegates met with their Chinese counterparts on June 10 and 11.
 
Professor Acs - appointed Chief Economist for SBA
Professor Zoltan Acs has been appointed the Chief Economist for the US Small Business Administration.
 
Jody Keenan - Confirmed as member of the Virginia-Washington, DC District Export Council
Jody Keenan, Director of Virginia SBDC Network, was confirmed in June by the Dept. of Commerce as a member of the Virginia-Washington, DC District Export Council.

Dean Haynes named Visiting Professor and International Advisor
Dean Kingsley Haynes has been named visiting professor in the School of Public Policy and Management at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China; visiting professor in the School of Geography at East China Normal University in Shanghai, China; and visiting professor in the School of Geography, Planning and Environmental Management at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. In addition, he has been selected as one of two international advisors for the review panel of the Netherlands Ministry of Education on the Review and Assessment of the Technology Universities of the Netherlands.
 
Professor Anacker - presenter at The Ohio State University
Professor Katrin Anacker presented "Utilizing Geert Hofstede's Cultural Dimensions Successfully in Germany" on May 25 in City and Regional Planning at the Austin E. Knowlton School of Architecture at The Ohio State University via videoconference.
 
PhD student Haifeng Qian offered assistant professor position
PhD student Haifeng Qian has been offered an assistant professor position at the Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University. U.S.News & World Report ranked the university second in the 2008 Public Affairs Specialty Rankings: City Management and Urban Policy.
 
MPP alumnus Baxter accepts fellowship to work at National Nuclear Security Administration
Alumnus Philip Baxter (MPP '10) accepted a fellowship with the Nonproliferation Graduate Fellowship Program to work at the National Nuclear Security Administration. The fellowship, which starts in June, is run through the Pacific Northwest National Laboratories.
 
Professor Rajan - organizer of interdisciplinary workshop in Singapore
Professor Ramkishen Rajan is one of the organizers of the interdisciplinary workshop sponsored by the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, University of South Australia, Cornell University, and George Mason University, which will be held in Singapore on May 19. The workshop focuses on selected issues on finance and development in Asia. Rajan will present "Financial Integration and Capital Flows in Asia."
 
PhD student and TPOL alumnus Hardy – Program Director for Planning and Policy of AASHTO
PhD student Matthew Hardy (TPOL '02) will be program director for planning and policy of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Official's Policy and Government Relations Division beginning May 17.
 
PhD Students Sachs and Hare presenters at Wilson Center
PhD Students Marcus Sachs and Forrest Hare will participate in the event "Congress, the Executive Branch and the Cyber Threat," which will be held at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars on May 17.

Alumna Tara Sheehan (MPP '05) became the executive director of American Public Policy Association and Management, also known as APPAM, on May 10.

Professor Janine Wedel discussed her book, Shadow Elite: How the World’s New Power Brokers Undermine Democracy, Government, and the Free Market, at the Department of Geography and Sociology, University of Strathclyde, UK on May 10.

Professor Janine Wedel presented "Future of Sociology and Anthropology of Law" on May 7 at the "Twenty-fifty Anniversary of Chair in Sociology and Anthropology of Custom and Law" at the Warsaw University in Poland.

Professor David Hart, director of the Center for Science and Technology Policy, presented "What Do Foreign-Born Founders Bring to Entrepreneurial Teams?" at the 2010 Industry Studies Conference in Chicago, May 6.
 
Jennifer Torney – Mason May Employee of the Month
Jennifer Torney, SPP Office Administrator in Arlington, is Mason's Employee of the Month for May. She was presented with the special award on May 4 on the Arlington Campus in recognition of her outstanding contributions.
 
Professor Shelley – hosts conference about crime-terror nexus
Professor Louise Shelley, founder and director of the Terrorism Transnational Crime and Corruption Center, hosted "The Crime-Terror Nexus: Perspectives and Lessons Learned from International Researchers and Practitioners" on May 3 on the Arlington Campus. The conference was presented by the Turkish Institute for Security and Democracy.

PhD Alumnus Czarda to be president of Greensboro College
Lawrence D. Czarda (PhD '97), vice president for administration at George Mason University, becomes president of Greensboro College in North Carolina at the end of April 2010. He also will serve as a professor of public administration at the college.
 
Professor Hart – keynote speaker at conference in Athens
Professor David Hart, director of the Center for Science and Technology Policy, delivered the keynote address, "High-Tech Immigrant Entrepreneurship in the US" to the National Technical University of Athens 2010 conference organized by the Laboratory of Industrial and Energy Economics in Athens, April 29 to 30.
 
PhD Alumnus Captain Bruce Lindsey and crew receive award for assistance in Haiti
Alumnus Bruce H. Lindsey (PhD '05) is captain of the USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70). Deputy Defense Secretary William J. Lynn III visited the ship on April 26 to present awards to crewmembers for assisting in the evacuation and treatment of Haitians after the January 12 earthquake. According to Lindsey, their Haiti operations included delivering 36,250 pounds of medical supplies; 147,591 gallons of water; and more than one million pounds of food. They performed 1,152 medical evacuations by helicopter during 1,299 helicopter sorties. Sixty Haitians were cared for onboard the ship in the medical facility, including one who needed brain surgery. Professor Perry and PhD student Coleman receive Best Paper Research Award
Professor Wayne D. Perry and PhD student David W. Coleman's paper "Information Sharing Effectiveness and Organizational Impacts in the Federal Sector" won the Best Paper Research Award in Computer Information Systems at the International Academy of Business and Public Administration Disciplines Conference held in Dallas, Texas, on April 23, 2010.
 
Professor Button – keynote speaker at conference in Mexico City
Professor Kenneth Button, director of the Center for Transportation Policy, Operations, and Logistics and of the Center for Aerospace Policy Management, delivered the keynote address, "The Implications of the Open Skies Policy" to the conference on Market Access to Air Transport Services and its Consequences, held in Mexico City, April 22 to 23.
 
Patricia Peacock elected vice president of education for APTAC
Patricia A. Peacock, Prince William Mason Enterprise Center director, was elected vice president of education for the Association of Procurement Technical Assistance Centers in April.
 
Professor Rozell presents political science honor society lecture at Catholic University
Professor Mark Rozell gave the annual Pi Sigma Alpha (a political science honor society) lecture at Catholic University of America, April 22. Rozell spoke on "Obama's Leadership at Midterm."
 
Professor Schneider – participant in 2010 Elections Roundtable
Professor Bill Schneider participated in the 2010 Elections Roundtable sponsored by SPP and the Department of Communication and held on the Fairfax Campus on April 22.
 
Professor La Porte wins JCPA Award for Best Article 2009
Professor Todd La Porte and Ivan Katchanovski's article "Democracy, Colonial Legacy, and the Openness of Cabinet-level Websites in Developing Countries" won the Journal of Comparative Policy Analysis (JCPA) Award for Best Article 2009. The award will be presented at the annual workshop of the JCPA and International Comparative Policy Analysis Forum held April 22 to 24 at the University of Pittsburgh.
 
PhD student Hu receives award for Best Student Paper Competition at AAGA annual meeting
PhD student Xiaochu Hu received the Travel Award, and her paper, "Occupations, Geographic Migration Patterns, and Age: A Case Study of Migrants from Bozhou, China," received second runner-up for the Best Student Paper Competition Award from the China Geography Specialty Group during the annual meeting of the Association of American Geographers Association held in Washington, D.C., April 14–18.
 
Professor Addelson – presenter at Organizational Story Work Conference
Professor Mark Addelson presented "The Stories We Work By" at the ninth annual Day of Organizational Story Work organized by the Golden Fleece. The You, Me & We: Connecting through Story conference was held on April 17 on the Arlington Campus.
 
PhD Student Patel presents paper during Association of American Geographers Annual meeting
PhD Student Amit Patel presented a paper on Slum Formation Modeling in the "Perspectives on Geographic Complexity: Theories and Methods" session during Association of American Geographers (AAG) Annual Meeting in Washington, DC on April 17.
 
MPP student Ledford – speaker at Horatio Alger Association
MPP student Brandon Ledford spoke at the Horatio Alger Association event honoring scholars and supporters at Constitution Hall on April 16. Attendees included U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, retired General Tommy Franks, and former Secretary of State and former National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice. Ledford spoke about his history with the organization and his experience as an intern for Justice Thomas at the Supreme Court.
 
Professor Acs – presents about globalization and the Global Entrepreneurship Index
Professor Zoltan Acs, director of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Public Policy, presented "Globalisation: Countries, Cities and Multinationals" at the CSTP/CISTP seminar on April 15 on the Arlington Campus. Acs also presented "The Mason Perspective on Global Entrepreneurship and Development: The Global Entrepreneurship Index" on April 12 on the Fairfax Campus.
 
PhD Alumnus Czarda to be president of Greensboro College
Lawrence D. Czarda (PhD '97), vice president for administration at George Mason University, becomes president of Greensboro College in North Carolina at the end of April 2010. He also will serve as a professor of public administration at the college.
 
Professor Anacker – speaker at AAG Annual Meeting
Professor Anacker will present the paper "Queering the Suburbs: Analyzing Property Values in Male and Female Same-Sex Suburbs in the United States" at the Association of American Geographers (AAG) Annual Meeting on April 15, in Washington, D.C.
 
PhD students Jung and Dolan organize STGlobal student graduate conference
PhD students Yu Jin Jung and Dana Dolan are members of the organizing committee for the 10th Annual STGlobal student graduate conference, "Innovating the Future: Critical Perspectives in Science & Technology." This multi-disciplinary graduate student conference, April 9-11, in Washington DC sponsored by the National Academies, AAAS, and the STGlobal Consortium, is open to all George Mason University graduate students and faculty. Professor Auerswald selected topic leader for 2010 Clinton Global Initiative annual meeting
Professor Philip Auerswald was selected to be a topic leader for the 2010 Clinton Global Initiative annual meeting, which will be held September 21 to 23 in New York City. Auerswald and Julia Novy-Hildesley, executive director of the Lemelson Foundation, will be topic leaders for "Strengthening Market-Based Solutions."
 
Professors Stephen Fuller and John McClain - presenters at Economic Development Authority second annual economic presentation
Professors Stephen Fuller and John McClain, director and deputy director, respectively, of the Center of Regional Analysis, will present a report on fiscal impacts for the City of Fairfax at its Economic Development Authority second annual economic presentation. The event takes place at the Old Town Hall in Fairfax, Virginia, on April 7.

Also on April 7, Professor Fuller presented his latest findings on the regional economy at the Hilton Washington Dulles Airport in Herndon on April 7. The event was sponsored by the Economic Development Committee of the Dulles Regional Chamber of Commerce and Horizon Consulting.

Professor Dinan awarded Fernand Braudel Senior Fellowship
Professor Desmond Dinan was awarded a Fernand Braudel Senior Fellowship in the Department of History and Civilization at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy, for spring semester 2011. The fellowship is awarded to established academics with an international reputation, so they may pursue their research at the institute. Dinan will study the meaning, uses, and abuses of crises in the history of European political and economic integration.

Professors Acs, Hughes Hallet, Rajan – ranked as top economists
As of March 2010, George Mason University School of Public Policy and Professors Zoltan Acs, Andrew Hughes Hallett, and Ramkishen Rajan were ranked in the top 25 percent of institutions and economists in Virginia by the Research Papers in Economics (RePEc) database.
 
Professor Hayden – presenter at Relevance of Risk Management and Information-Sharing to Homeland Security conference
Professor Michael Hayden (retired Air Force general, former CIA director, and head of the National Security Agency) delivered the closing remarks at the Relevance of Risk Management and Information-Sharing to Homeland Security conference sponsored by Mason's Law School and held on the Arlington Campus on March 30. The event was cohosted by the George Mason University Center for Infrastructure Protection and Homeland Security (CIP/HS) and the Security Analysis and Risk Management Association and sponsored by PricewaterHouseCoopers.
 
Professor Deitz – keynote speaker at Workshop on Policy, Law, and Technology for Cyber Security
Professor Robert Deitz delivered the keynote speech "Some Problems of Cyber Security" at the Workshop on Policy, Law, and Technology for Cyber Security, sponsored by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Georgetown University Law School on March 25 in San Francisco.
 
Professor Deitz – presenter to Defense Policy Board
Professor Robert Deitz delivered a presentation outlining various cyber security issues to the Defense Policy Board at the Pentagon on March 18.
 
PhD Student Beatriz Cuartas - recipient of EPCC Diamond Award
PhD Student Beatriz Cuartas will be presented by El Paso Community College (EPCC) with the Diamond Award, which is given to minority women who have made a positive difference in the El Paso community.  The presentation will be held on March 30 in El Paso, Texas and will be presided by Dr. Richard Rhodes, EPCC President, and by State Representative Marissa Marquez.
 
MPP student Eric Keller and POPP student Jennifer Mitchell selected as Presidential Management Finalists
Eric Keller (Master of Public Policy) and Jennifer Mitchell (Peace Operations) were selected as Presidential Management Finalists for 2009-10. The highly selective program attracts people with an interest in public policy to federal service.
 
Professor Rajan - speaker at George Mason University Center for Global Studies conference
Professor Ramkishen Rajan is a speaker in the panel discussion "The Political Economy of South-South: Trade, Development, and Human Mobility," which is part of the March 18 George Mason University Center for Global Studies conference, "The South-South Dynamic in Global Affairs: A Changing World Order?" The conference will be held at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, D.C.
 
Professor Acs presents at Brookings Institution
Professor Zoltan Acs, director of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Public Policy, presented as part of the panel discussion, "Intellectual Foundation for High-Impact Small Business and Job Creation" at the Brookings and Small Business Administration's High-Level Working Group on the Future of Small Business which was held at the Brookings Institution on March 15.
 
PhD Student Zhenhua Chen - receives Graduate Student Best Paper Award
PhD student Zhenhua Chen's paper, "Analysis of Factors Affecting High Speed Train Ridership in the United States-the Acela Express Case Study" was awarded the Graduate Student Best Paper Award of the 51st Transportation Research Forum held in Arlington, Virginia, March 11-13.
 
Terrorism, Transnational Crime and Corruption Center recipient of 2010 Open World National Grantee of Merit Award
The Terrorism, Transnational Crime and Corruption Center (TraCCC), founded and directed by Professor Louise Shelley, received the 2010 Open World National Grantee of Merit Award. This award recognized TraCCC's success with the grant it received in 2009 for its Open World Leadership Program, which from 2007 to 2009 brought together 10 delegations of Eurasia professional leaders in the policymaking, law enforcement, nongovernmental organization, academic, and business communities to share and learn U.S. methods of combating human trafficking and child exploitation. The award also recognizes the program's sustainable results and the postprogram activities of the participants. A ceremony was held on March 8 at the Library of Congress. James H. Billington, Open World Board of Trustees chair and librarian of Congress, presented the award. In 1999, the U.S. Congress established Open World to enhance cooperation between the United States and Russia. In 2003, Congress made all post-Soviet states eligible for the program.
 
POPP Alumnus Azita Ranjbar helped organize conference sponsored by the British Council and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization
As a member of the Transatlantic Network 2020, Azita Ranjbar (Peace Operations '08) helped organize and attended the "Conflict Prevention and Resolution: The Role for Cultural Relations" conference sponsored by the British Council and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The conference was held in Brussels, Belgium, in March. Ranjbar works on criminal law and transitional justice issues in Afghanistan for the U.S. Institute of Peace.

Professor Shelley - presided over TraCCC conference
Professor Louise Shelley, founder and director of the Terrorism Transnational Crime and Corruption Center, presided over the center's conference, "Criminal Networks, Smuggling and WMD." The event was held February 25-26 on the George Mason Arlington Campus.
 
Professor Rozell - presenter in Warsaw, Poland and Berlin, Germany
Professor Mark Rozell presented "Religion, Politics, and Democracy" at the Center for International Relations on February 25, 2010, in Warsaw, Poland. He also presented "Obama: His First Year Leadership" at the Lazarski School of Commerce and Law in Warsaw on February 25; the American Studies Center of the University of Warsaw on February 24; the American Information Resource Center, U.S. Embassy on February 24; the Institute of International Relations at the University of Warsaw on February 23; and as part of a roundtable discussion hosted by the Polish National Security Bureau on February 23. On February 22 in Berlin, Germany, Rozell presented "The Role of the Media" as part of a Transatlantic Comparison of Muslim Integration in Germany and the United States, a roundtable discussion sponsored by the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies.
 
Professor Baker and Professor Manheim - featured speakers at SPP Alumni Association Meet the Authors event
Professor Ann Baker and Affiliate Professor Frank Manheim were featured speakers at the SPP Alumni Association Meet the Authors event on February 24 on the Arlington Campus. Manheim discussed his book The Conflict over Environmental Regulation in the United States (Springer, 2009), and Baker discussed her book Catalytic Conversations: Organizational Communication and Innovation (M. E. Sharpe, 2009).

Affiliate Professor Frank Manheim served as reviewer for the 2010 Environmental Protection Agency Environmental Fellowship Awards.

Professor Jack Goldstone, director of the Center for Global Policy, was an expert panelist discussing relations between Iran and the United States at an event held at Loyola University New Orleans on February 18.

Professor Phil Auerswald was a feature speaker at the at the MIT Enterprise Forum winter gala on February 18 at the Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C.
 
Professor Rozell - keynote speaker for Bill of Rights Institute
Professor Mark Rozell delivered the keynote speech at the program Liberty and Executive Power sponsored by the Bill of Rights Institute and Liberty Fund on February 18, in Arlington, Virginia.
 
PhD Alumna Robert V. Hamilton - presenter at proceedings of APPAM conference
Robert V. Hamilton (PhD '10) presented "Foreign Science and Engineering Doctoral Attainment at American Universities," written with Professors Wayne D. Perry and Connie McNeely, at the proceedings of the APPAM 2010 Maastricht Special International Conference "Migration: A World in Motion," held February 18 to 20 in Maastricht, Netherlands.
 
PhD Alumna Checherita's paper listed on SSRN top ten
Cristina Checherita's (PhD '10) co-authored research paper "What Explains the Surge in Euro Area Sovereign Spreads during the Financial Crisis of 2007–09?" (published as the ECB working paper no. 1131/December 2009) was recently listed on Social Science Research Network's Top Ten download list for Banking and Monetary Policy.

Professor Goldstone – participant at major conference in Moscow
Professor Jack A. Goldstone participated in a major conference in Moscow on "Russia and the World: Challenges of the New Decade" (January 21–23). He spoke on the need for more encouragement of small business and entrepreneurship in Russia on a panel with Anatoly Chubais (former director of privatization in Russia, now director-general of Russian Nanotechnology Corporation) and Sergey Sobianin (deputy chair and chief of staff of the Russian government).
 
Professor Thatchenkery – presenter at forum in Rome
Professor Tojo Thatchenkery was one of seven presenters at the Management and Organizational Effectiveness Forum: Positioning FAO Staff at the Forefront of Excellence, which was held in Rome, Italy, January 19–20. Thatchenkery presented "Leading Change through the Power of Appreciative Intelligence" and "Coping Strategies for Thriving in a Changing Environment."
 
Professor Malawer's paper listed on SSRN top ten
Professor Stuart Malawer's paper, "Cyberwarfare: Legal & Policy Proposals for U.S. & Global Governance" was recently listed on Social Science Research Network's Top Ten download list for National Security & Foreign Relations Law.

PhD Alumnus, Captain Bruce Lindsey, commands carrier to aid Haiti
Captain Bruce Lindsey (PhD '05) is the commanding officer of the USS Carl Vinson, the largest American vessel to first reach Haiti after its earthquake. The aircraft carrier took up position off of Haiti's coast and began flying in necessary supplies. The ship can act as a floating airport for helicopters, and it has equipment to purify water and extensive medical facilities.
   
PhD Alumnus, Gorman, has company map earthquake damage
Sean Gorman (PhD '04) founder of FortiusOne, a data analysis and visual intelligence firm, is having his company map earthquake damage in Haiti. The information is hoped to help with search and rebuilding efforts.
   
ICP Alumnus, Cuccinelli, elected Attorney General for Virginia
Ken Cuccinelli (ICP 2000) holds the office as the Attorney General for Virginia after winning the election in November 2009 and taking office in January 2010.
   
Professor Shelley – panelist at National Press Club
Professor Louise Shelley participated on the panel discussion "Tracking Organized Crime and Terrorism in the Digital Age" which was sponsored by the International Center for Journalists. The event took place on January 19 at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

Professor Wedel's book selected as first HuffPost Book Club for 2010
Professor Janine R. Wedel discussed her new book, Shadow Elite: How the World's New Power Brokers Undermine Democracy, Government, and the Free Market (published by Basic Books, December 2009) at Politics and Prose in Washington, D.C, on January 8, at Barnes & Noble in New York City on January 13, and at the Woodrow Wilson Center on January 19. The book was chosen as the first HuffPost Book Club selection of 2010.
