PhD student Cristina Checherita - presenter at Tinbergen Institute
PhD student Cristina Checherita presents her paper "An Investigation of Human Capital Endogeneity in Models of Economic Growth" on June 30 at the Tinbergen Institute Workshop in Amsterdam.
   
TraCCC with U.S. Department of Justice's Resident Legal Advisor to the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, hosts delegation from Russia
The delegation includes three members of the Russian Federal Duma's Committee on the Rights of Women, Children and Families, and a senior advisor to President Medvedov.  On June 27 "Local Law Enforcement Efforts to Combat Domestic Sex Trafficking of Minors" was the discussion and a presentation followed by two local law enforcement detectives from Montgomery County, MD.  Their study focuses on U.S. methods of combating child sexual exploitation, a sphere of research in which TraCCC is active.
   
Forrest Hare (PhD Student) wins Best Presentation
Forrest Hare, PhD student, won the award for Best PhD Student Presentation for The Interdependent Security Problem in a Knowledge-Intensive Industry: Addressing cyber espionage in the Defense Industrial Base at the Technology, Management, and Policy Consortium annual graduate student research conference held in Utrecht, Netherlands on June 27.
   
Professor Kenneth Button - keynote speaker at MIT-Portugal Conference
Professor Button spoke about Air Transport and Airports on June 26 at the MIT-Portugal conference during the session on R&D at Universities.
   
Professor Zoltan Acs - keynote speaker at ICSB World Conference
Professor Zoltan Acs spoke about "Perspectives and Trends on SME/Entrepreneurship Research, Education, Policy, and Practice on June 23 at the International Council for Small Business (ICSB) World Conference in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
   
Professor Kenneth Button - keynote speaker at Bitre Transport Colloquium in Canberra, Australia
Professor Button's keynote address, "Aviation and Its Growing Role in Economic Growth and Development" opened the 8th Bitre Transport Colloquium sponsored by the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government of Australia on June 17-19.
   
PhD Student Henry L. Vega - presenter at LAEBA Conference
Henry L. Vega (Ph.D. student) presented "Trade and Transportation Costs in Ecuador: A Case Study of Cut Flowers" on June 17 at the Latin America/Caribbean and Asia/Pacific Economics and Business Association (LAEBA) 2008 Fourth Annual Conference in Lima, Peru. The conference focused on trade costs and regional cooperation. LAEBA assists in linking academic research with policymakers and the private sector.
   
Ryan Sutter (PhD Student) wins first place M. Jarvin Emerson Award
Ryan Sutter's first place win at the 39th Annual Mid-Continent Regional Science Association on June 10 will be published in the Association's journal, The Journal of Regional Analysis & Policy.
   
PhD student Jill Rough participates in Women in International Security Symposium
PhD student Jill Rough participated in the 19th annual Women in International Security summer symposium, "New Challenges for Global Security" in Washington, D.C from June 8-13.
   
Professor Button - keynote speaker at Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) Workshop
Professor Kenneth Button delivered the keynote address "What Can Economics Contribute to Critical Infrastructure Protection Policy?" on June 3 at the CIP Workshop held at Dalhousie University in Canada.
   
Professor James P. Pfiffner - finalist for Constitutional Commentary Award
The award is given annually, since 2007, to an author who has produced work that improves public discourse and to "recognize exceptional critical analysis of the constitutional implications of public policy." Pfiffner is selected as a finalist for The Bush Presidency and the Constitution.
   
Professor Louise Shelley appointed to the World Economic Forum's Global Agenda Council on Illicit Trade
The council is a newly formed strategic advisory council to the World Economic Forum. Appointments are made to those who are recognized by peers as influential articulate leaders.
   
TPOL student, Schaubhut, to conduct research at International Road Federation
George Robert Schaubhut, a student in the Transportation Policy,Operations and Logistics program begins in July an internship at the International Road Federation in Alexandria. Areas of research include safety, economic forecasts, and international standards concerning freight shipping.
   
TPOL Practicum delivers report on National Mall Transportation Study for National Mall Conservancy

PhD student, Phillip Mangness - presenter at Policy History Conference
Phillip W. Magness (PhD student) presented his paper on the Warehousing Act of 1846 and its role in promoting economic markets on May 31 at the Policy History Conference in Clayton, Missouri.
   
Professor Wedel - commencement speaker at alma mater
Professor Janine Wedel accepted the honor to give the commencement speech on May 25 at her alma mater, Bethel College in North Newton, Kansas, where she earned her bachelor's degree.
   
TPOL Presentation with Asst. Secretary for Transportation Policy
The SPP TPOL program, in conjunction with the Young Professionals in Transportation, hosted Tyler Duvall, Assistant Secretary for Transportation Policy and Acting Under Secretary for Policy in the Office of the Secretary at the U.S. Department of Transportation on May 19. Topics included federal transportation policy, reauthorization, infrastructure finance, privatization and public private partnerships, congestion pricing and environment and sustainability.
   
Professor Kenneth Button organizer of International Industrial Organization Conference
Professor Kenneth Button was the local organizing committee chair for the 6th Annual International Industrial Organization Conference held in Arlington, Virginia from May 16-18. More than 500 attended the conference sponsored by Industrial Organization Society and George Mason University.
   
Professor Kenneth Button - presenter at 31st IRU World Congress, Istanbul, Turkey
Professor Kenneth Button was a panelist at the 31st International Road Transport Union (IRU) on May 15. His panel was titled "Road Transport, Driving Peace and Prosperity" which addressed international trade and tourism as tools of peaceful co-existence among nations. Former President of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev also addressed the conference which was attended by 1800.
   
Professor Jack A. Goldstone - presenter at National Academy of Sciences
Professor Jack A. Goldstone presented "Improving Democracy Assistance: Building Knowledge through Evaluations and Research" on May 9 at the National Academy of Sciences. This Academy study, chaired by Goldstone, is intended to guide USAID's research on democracy assistance, stressing evidence-based research.
   
Professor Mark Rozell - presenter at the American Right Conference
Professor Mark Rozell presented his paper "The Religious Right and Contemporary Politics" at the Future of the American Right Conference at Oxford University from May 8-10.
   
PhD student Cristina Checherita accepted for summer internship at European Central Bank
PhD student Cristina Checherita was accepted for a summer internship at the European Central Bank in Frankfurt, Germany. While there, she will continue researching the role of macro policies in the process of economic convergence.
 
SPP awarded certification from China's State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs
China's State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs approved certification of Mason's School of Public Policy, making the school one of a select few overseas training institutions within a university to be awarded this approval.

Professor Ann Baker - presenter to the Knowledge Management Advisory Team at National Science Foundation
Professor Ann Baker was invited to speak to the Knowledge Management Advisory Team at the National Science Foundation on April 21 in Arlington, Virginia. Baker discussed SPP activity in Knowledge Management, the organization development and knowledge management master's program, and her knowledge management research.
   
Professor Delio Gianturco receives Distinguished Faculty Award
Professor Delio Gianturco was honored by the SPP Alumni Chapter on April 4 with a Distinguished Faculty Award for his outstanding services to SPP and its alumni and for his ability to motivate students to excel as scholars and global citizens.
   
Emilia Istrate and Jill Rough receive Distinguished Student Awards
PhD students Emilia Istrate and Jill Rough were honored by the SPP Alumni Chapter on April 4 as recipients of the 2008 Distinguished Student Award, which is given for outstanding scholarship, service, and leadership.
   
Ozge Koray receives Distinguished SPP Alumni Award
Alumna Ozge Koray (ICP 2000) received the Distinguished SPP Alumni Award on April 4 from the George Mason University Alumni Association at the Celebration of Distinction in April 2008. Koray served as vice president of the School of Public Policy Alumni Chapter from 2005 to 2006 and its president from 2006 to 2007. From 2007 to 2008, Koray participated in the chapter's Signature Event and Student Awards Committee.
   
PhD student James Szymalak - presenter at Midwest Political Science Association National Conference
James Szymalak (Ph.D. student) presented "Burrowed In, Then Rooted Out: Can Political Appointee Conversions Work?" on April 3 in Chicago, Illinois at the 2008 Midwest Political Science Association Annual National Conference.
   
Professor Pfiffner - panelist at Hofstra University
Professor James Pfiffner was a panelist for From Votes to Victory: Winning and Governing the White House in the 21st Century Conference on April 3.
   
Professor Button elected TRF president
Professor Kenneth Button was elected president of the Transportation Research Forum (TRF).
   
Holzheimer Inducted as a Fellow of the American Institute of Certified Planners
Terry Holzheimer, (Ph.D. alumnus) Director of Arlington Economic Development was inducted into the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP). Fellowship is granted to planners who have been members of AICP and have achieved excellence in professional practice, teaching and mentoring, research, public/community service, and leadership.
