The Transportation Policy, Operations, and Logistics master's program is available through video teleconference-based distance learning from the School of Public Policy at George Mason University. The program began in fall 2000 in cooperation with the Richmond and Bristol offices of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center in Abingdon, and subsequently expanded to multiple sites in Virginia, including Hampton-Roads and Fredericksburg. In 2003, the program expanded to include the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) in Helena. As of spring 2003, 12 VDOT employees have earned their master's degrees via distance learning.
Students participate in classes via interactive video teleconferencing sites at VDOT district offices and the MDT. VDOT provides the video-bridge support. Classes originate at George Mason University's Arlington campus.
Late afternoon and evening classes are designed to accommodate both part-time and full-time students. Distance-learning students are often able to take classes conveniently at or near their worksites. Fall and spring enrollment is available. Excellent professors and fellow students from throughout the transportation industry create a stimulating and challenging educational environment.
Addition of new sites: The TPOL program would be happy to consider the addition of new locations for delivery of the program. Determination of the feasibility of new locations depends on a variety of factors, including facility and equipment availability, scheduling, time zone differences, and the number of students.
