Telecommunications Policy

Have you ever wondered how decisions about when to launch new wireless services are made? Would you like to be part of the policy decision-making process that chooses where to provide high speed smart phones and wi-fi hot spots to the general public? If you’re interested in the kinds of complex policy issues created by our vast wired and wireless communications networks, from the Internet to broadband wireless to radio and television broadcasting then the Master of Arts in Telecommunications Policy program may be right for you.

Telecommunications issues cut across a variety of academic fields and our Telecommunications Policy master’s degree program reflects this by offering a highly interdisciplinary curriculum. It will teach you how language, culture, and technology intersect with management, regulation, and competition to shape telecommunications policy at all levels of government and industry.

The program crosses academic lines to explore best practices for dealing with issues, such as which products should be taxed, whether or not controlled monopolies should be dismantled in favor of free enterprise, and how instantaneous communications and social networks are changing the fabric of society. Students enrolled in this program will develop a solid theoretical foundation and at the same time explore practical applications of their studies. Students can choose from two distinct emphasis areas: Telecommunications Policy or International Telecommunications.

Graduates of the program will find their skills in high demand. The Washington, D.C. metropolitan area has numerous employers in the field of telecommunications. From the federal government's executive, legislative, and judicial branches to the myriad policy centers, foundations, and telecommunications companies, there is no shortage of professional opportunities in the field of telecommunications policy. With a degree in Telecommunications Policy from George Mason University’s School of Public Policy, graduates are well-positioned to assume and excel in leadership positions.
